Xxx
:aaaprot:

Well did it surprise anyone? Was anyone shocked? Unfortunately unless something is done quickly I personally think, and Ive been saying it for quite a while now, an English supporter will get killed watching their club in Europe due to incompetence and heavy handed tactics of stewards and in particular the police. Ive watched United in 30 different countries on 3 different continents and Ive seen a lot of things in my time. Ive been to Turkey on several occasions Ive travelled to Eastern Europe to places such Bucharest, Kiev, and Budapest. Ive been to Poland and Slovakia, all of whos police forces have a somewhat reputation for taking no prisoners, however what I experienced on Tuesday night in Lens even left me speechless. From the moment I saw the police on the motorway on their way into Lille/Lens from wherever they were drafted in from I just knew that trouble lay ahead. Yet again it seems like riot police were drafted in from all over France under the pretence that thousands of English football hooligans were coming over to fight and cause general mayhem. This in its self has been the cause of a lot of trouble over the years on our travels, most notably in Turin, where police are there specifically to deal with any trouble. It seems like some time they are so revved up for trouble, the adrenalin gets the better of them and they either completely over react to the most minor of incidents which then escalates into a big incident, or as was the case in Lens they presume theres trouble when there is not because they are told they are there to deal with the trouble that there is definitely going to be. They saw supporters scaling the fences and thought Heres the hooligans lets have them. In some cases it even seems like they actually start the trouble so they can get all their riot gear on and get stuck in. I suppose they can go back home and tell their wives/girlfriends how brave theyve been stopping all those English hooligans. Anyway back to the police on the motorway. I was driving up from Paris, it was lunchtime when just outside Lille we hit quite a lot of traffic. We were crawling along in the outside lane when just in front on the inside of us six police vans and a coach full of riot police looked like they had enough of the traffic. They stuck their lights on and started near enough ramming everyone out of their way until they decided it would be easier to get onto the hard shoulder and fly down their. We all commented on how aggressive they behaved and I thought if they are acting like this now what are they going to be like later. The day passed peacefully enough in Lille, however a large protest by locals, which amazingly police let march right through the streets where hundreds of United fans were drinking in bars, could have been a potential hotspot. However despite a bit of banter and singing the marched passed by, eventually. Onto Lens and the start of what can only be described as the biggest shambles ever seen. Yet again we were faced with the scenario at the ground of stewards and police not having a clue of where to send supporters as they have little or no knowledge of the actual ground they were at as they dont usually police or steward it. They were sending United fans all over when asked where the entrance was for United fans. After walking the wrong way round the ground, due to the police showing us the wrong way, we eventually found our way to the so called entrance about 5 minutes before kick off. Two big metal gates which looked more exit gates, we found out this would be the first of two ticket checks before the actual turnstiles, if thats what you would call them. We got through as we all had valid tickets from the club, walked past all the parked coaches through the second barrier ticket check which is where the police also searched us. There was not one single bit of trouble. At the turnstiles there was a small queue of about 70-80 people, however no one seemed to be getting in. By this stage there were about 100 or so United supporters through the second ticket check. Everyone at this point started wondering what was going on. It looked like everyone had valid tickets. People were beginning to shout and hold their tickets up saying they had tickets why are we not getting in. This probably went on for 5-10 minutes. Other United fans were now coming the other way out of the ground saying it was mayhem, theres no room, people are getting crushed and the police are battering anything that moves. At this point the police outside the ground started running about. Some exit gates to the side were opened and more police came running out. We were stood to the right hand side of the entrance, behind us were some metal barriers, the police came running over pushed us out the way, went behind the barriers where all there protective gear was. They started padding up, they seemed really pumped up, shouting and geeing each other on, at this point we were getting calls from people inside the ground and back home checking we were ok as everyone was getting crushed. I looked at the police and thought fucking hell theres people getting crushed and all your interested in is getting your riot gear on. People at the entrances were now getting pushed back. Stewards started pushing people back saying no one else was getting in they were becoming aggressive towards supporters. At this point the police completely lost the plot and attacked everyone who had been queuing with tickets, batons were drawn and people were getting hit, there were at this point about 100-200 of us outside. Its hard to say as there was so much commotion and people running about to get out of the way. I was with my wife and my 64 year old father in law who we had took out as a surprise for his 65th birthday next month. Unbelievably the police then started spraying tear gas like it was going out of fashion. They were firing their extinguishers, not like the little pepper sprays they have in England, at point blank range into peoples faces. My wife called for me to come and help with a United fan that was on his knees about 20 yards from the entrance. There was a woman struggling to lift him, he was holding his face, it looked like he had been exposed to a serious amount of tear gas. I grabbed hold of him; everyone was shouting and screaming, Id never seen chaos like this before. As I lifted this guy with my wife and the other woman who was already there a police officer came running over with his canister and sprayed tear gas right into my face from about 2 yards away. All I was doing was picking an injured man up. We got him up and ran off to where all the coaches were parked. I met up with my friend who was with us and my 64 year old father-in-law who unbelievable had been attacked physically and sprayed with gas by these animals, sorry I mean police. Everyone was in agony holding there faces. There were grown men, big lads, on there hands and knees clutching there faces screaming. I quickly clocked an English coach with a driver on it. I made him open the door and asked for some water. Unbelievably he actual started charging us a euro for a bottle. I started passing bottles out, everyone was helping each other. The entrances at the top were now out of sight. We reluctantly realised we were getting in but people were getting crushed inside so it wasnt worth it, wed just get a pub and watch what was left of the match. It must have now been near on half time. We walked down to the bottom to the big metal gates where we had first come in. There was another line of police and stewards. To everyones disbelief they decided we werent getting out and started pushing us away back towards the coaches and turnstiles. Not only had we been chased down the hill from the turnstiles this lot want to send us back up again. After about a minute I looked up to where the coaches were and to my astonishment about 40 riot police, approx. 20 of them armed with dogs were running towards us. Let me tell you panic was now setting in. I tried to get my wife and father in law out the way by standing round the back of the police car to the side of the gates. All the police man did was jump out of his car open his boot and get his dog out and chased us back into the main group who by this stage were screaming to get out as the police were on top of everyone dogs, batons and the now customary tear gas. We were basically trapped. Eventually the gates were forced slightly opened and we got at. Again people were crawling on the floor. I myself had got gassed full in the face again, trying to protect my wife and father in law, I could hardly see, I was on a grass verge to the left as we came out. My wife gave me some water, I was now drenched, I looked to the left and yet another unit of riot police were jumping out of their vans padding up. I thought not again. I saw them load what looked like a tear gas gun and pointed it towards the fans who hadnt managed to get off, mainly due to being unable to see where they were going and helping those who were down, people were still screaming, I was shouting for everyone to get off as they were ready to go for us again. We got down the road and well out of the way. I was fuming, mad that we had been treated in such a way. How no one was seriously injured I dont know. We stopped at a burger van who politely gave us some eye drops to help us. Looks like he was prepared in full knowledge that tear gas would be used, seems a regular occurrence in France. We made a half hearted attempt to get into the ground round the other side, but we were just worn out, I suppose wed lost interest. We managed to watch the last half hour in a bar full of people who had been subjected to the same incident and other incidents which basically went The police just battered us for no apparent reason. After the match we were subjected to yet more hospitality by over eager police at the train station both in Lens and then back in Lille. Id lost all enthusiasm by then and went straight back to the hotel to bed, not before a taxi driver tried to charge us 25 euros for a journey which should have cost about 6. He explained Lilles not his City, I turned to him and said well it isnt mine either (or words similar I think after my day you can well imagine what I said) so theres 10 euros if you have a problem get the police, as if I wanted to see them again. It summed up my trip. Something needs to be done quickly otherwise we will be here this time next year discussing how this fatality could have been avoided. These thugs who parade round as police officers should be brought up and charged for attacking innocent people.
