DAVID BECKHAM has been axed by Steve McClaren on the day Englands new boss named John Terry as skipper. Beckham resigned as captain after the nations World Cup flop. And now he is out of the squad altogether for next Wednesdays friendly with Greece. Becks had ankle and knee strains after the tournament in Germany but has been training again for more than a week. He played for Real Madrid in a friendly against DC United in Seattle on Wednesday but clearly has a fight ahead for his international future. Terry, 25, cried tears of joy after being named as skipper. The Cheat$ki captain admitted: Its the ultimate honour. Terry was overcome with emotion after McClaren told him of his appointment. John has all the attributes a captain needs leadership, authority, courage, ability, tactical awareness and a total refusal to accept second best. Steven Gerrard was a strong candidate and will be my vice-captain. He is another superb club skipper who leads by example. England hitman Wayne Rooney reckons Terry is a top choice to take over the armband from Beckham. The Manchester United star said: JT is a leader on the pitch. He has been a great captain for Cheat$ki and, hopefully, can continue that for England. Gerrard said: Id like to congratulate John. Hell do a great job. מילא היה להעיף את בקהאם מהרכב שיהיה מחליף, אבל מהסגל? לא נראה לי החלטה טובה אחרי הכל בקהאם גם שהוא לא בתפקיד הקטפן הוא מן קפטן.

מקלארן טען שהדלת אינה סגורה בפני בקהאם (כלומר כן...) והוסיף שהוא אמר לבקהאם שהוא רוצה לקחת את הנבחרת לכיוון חדש. אם לא יקרה משהו דרמטי (בקהאם נכנס לכושר שאי אפשר להתעלם ממנו, משבר בקישור האנגלי וכו'), זה סופה של הקריירה הבינלאומית שלו. וטוב שכך. אנחנו באמת רוצים להתקדם.
עדיין לא הסוף של בקהאם , בגיל 31 יש לו עדיין מה לתרום , נכון לא קפטן ושחקן מוביל , אבל לבקהאם אן מקום בסגל? לדעתי מקלארן טועה עם בקהאם ,עם כל הכבוד לרצון שלו להראות שיש שינוי , לא צריך סתם לפגוע בשחקן שהיה סמל וכמו שאמרתי עדיין חיוני לסגל. למקלארן יש הזדמנות פז לשנות את שיטת המשחק ויפה שהוא מזמין המון חלוצים כמהפך ראשון לשבדי החולני , פיל נוויל !! , לא להאמין שהסדרן הזה חוזר לנעול נעלי כדורגל בנבחרת .
למרות שמדובר בסך הכל במשחק ידידות, ולמרות שיש פצועים פה ושם, העובדה שאל הסגל לא הובא קשר אחורי פרופר - מלמדת על כך שהלקחים מהכישלון של החרמן השוודי לא הופקו. הרבה חלוצים זה נחמד, דינו אשטון ודארן בנט (עם כל הכבוד וההערכה, ויש הרבה מאוד) הם לא השחקנים שיפתרו את הבעיות של אנגליה.
דינו אשטון לא שחקן מספיק גדול כדי לקחת נבחרת על הגב. לא לבד. הנבחרת האנגלית של החרמן לא הצליחה להוציא מסטיבן ג'רארד / פרנקי למפארד משחק אחד לרפואה בו שנייהם נותנים תפוקה שמתקרבת לסבירה. הבעייה הזו לא תשתנה גם אם רונאלדו ישחק ליד ווין רוני.
