Exchanging Pigskin for the Spanish Pitch
In The Red Zone

After receiving quite a talking to from certain people who disapproved of my failure to embrace Spanish culture while in Espana (i.e., watching American football instead of Spanish futbol), I decided to cave under the pressure and go to a futbol game. Strapped for cash and interested in checking out Madrid’s “team of the people,” I chose a game between the city’s lesser club, Atletico de Madrid, and a team I had never heard of, Real Sociedad.
With my foot so far in my mouth, it’s hard to find the words to describe this experience. Best to begin with just one:
“GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!”
The cry rang out loud and clear through the stadium when, deep into the second half, Atleti (as the team is called affectionately by its screaming fans) scored the only goal of the match. I didn’t know it was possible for a group of people in an open stadium to make that much noise, but the cheers are still ringing in my ears. That was the end, so let’s go back to the beginning.
As I exited the Metro station with my friends and began the 10-minute walk to the stadium, I was amazed by the flood of people flocking toward Vicente Calderon Stadium. We were more than an hour early, and there were hundreds of people in the streets, walking from every direction, blocking cars and stopping traffic on their way into the stadium. Madrilenos sat on any surface they could find, sipping on beer and snacking on sandwiches. Spaniards vending shirts, hats, the extremely popular scarves, and other Atleti team apparel lined the streets alongside vendors selling various types of nuts, candy, and popcorn, which fans brought into the stadium.
With my new Atleti T-shirt in one hand and a bag of candy in the other, I entered the stadium, not knowing what to expect.
I’ll tell you one thing: this was no football game.
My section of the stadium was filled with old people. Not like I joke about my dad being old, but like old old. Like had to be in their 70s old. Oddly, that did not dampen the energy in the stadium one iota. In fact, most of the old men were yelling at the referees louder than I could, and I come from a family of screamers.

It was a good thing that I decided to purchase an Atleti shirt, because there were precious few people inside the stadium who did not have some item of Atletico apparel on them. Nearly everyone wore a knitted Atleti scarf, which they waved like a rally towel, wore to keep warm, and used as a groveling device at various points during the game. These fans were not one-time aficionados, but die-hard, love-the-team-all-their-life devotees. The old guys put American fans to shame.
While I sat with the oldies, the young fanatics made their homes in the south side of the stadium, hereby known as the non-sitting section. During the 90-minute match, it appeared that not a single fan in that section sat down. Ever. Several fans (as in, more than five) brought marching band-style drums into the stadium, and I was pretty sure that I heard a cannon go off more than once (and my soccer-playing friend, seated to my right, confirmed the existence of smoke in the stadium following each blast). Everyone in the non-sitting section took part in creating a giant Spanish flag, complete with falling confetti, to begin the game, and the scene was right out of a Super Bowl commercial—everyone holding a piece of the flag, across the entire section, to make it work. I thought those sorts of things only happened in movies.
The section also sported the largest handmade banner I have ever seen. It stretched nearly the length of the stadium’s south end. Everyone seated in the non-sitting section (where I will be non-sitting for my next Atletico game) spent the game jumping up and down in unison, creating an amazing visual effect, and chanting various fight songs for the team. These were, without a doubt, the most intense fans I have ever seen. And I’m from Philadelphia, where we throw snowballs at Santa Claus when things don’t go our way.
Even though the players’ jerseys advertised a car company (Kia), this futbol experience was refreshingly free from commercialization, unlike American football, where each play, hit, and point is sponsored by a different enterprise (e.g., the Matt Blatt Auto Sales Splat of the Game). There were no annoying beer men walking the aisles with $7 beers, just old men selling 2 Euro cans of soda and cerveza, which they may have simply pulled out of their refrigerator at home and thrown into coolers that looked like they had come out of the garage for the occasion. There was no announcer telling us what had just happened or who had sponsored it, and no annoying halftime game designed to make someone make a fool out of himself in order to promote some company’s new product. The game programs were free, and sandwiches sold at halftime were large, well-made, and less than $5.
The Calderon stadium was built for the regular people, not the affluent. You could count the number of luxury boxes, wedged about a mile up the steep walls of the stadium, on two hands, and they didn’t look very luxurious to me. Prices for this game ranged from 22 to 60 Euros, and we sat in the front row of the lateral side, a bit to the right of center, for 40 Euros. This game was not about the money—it was about the futbol.
And the game itself had everything a fan could want—great saves by both goalies, fans throwing things onto the field, two near-brawls among the players, a referee pegged by the ball, a yellow card for us, a red card for them, and my team came out on top.

A football fan could get used to this.

Former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman expects Jose Mourinho's mind games and meticulous planning to give them the edge over Barcelona in their Champions League last 16 tie next week.

"Mourinho is the greatest coach I've ever met," Kezman told Reuters. "He's a very strong tactician. He has a team of seven people who work with him and he prepares for games so well it's incredible.
"I think Chelsea will win because they play a different kind of game to Barcelona, more varied, which makes them very difficult to beat."
The Serbia & Montenegro international, who left Stamford Bridge to join Primera Liga club Atletico Madrid, praised his former boss despite not having had the most comfortable of relationships with him in his year in England.
"With the media he is like an actor sometimes, from a good film not a poor one, but he's also a very difficult character," Kezman continued.
"We had a tough relationship. Our characters are similar and I was unhappy about being on the bench, but I learned a lot from him tactically and mentally. I really respect him."
Of his former team mates Kezman singled out captain John Terry as the principal character in Chelsea's dressing room.
"Terry is a great leader and a fantastic person on and off the pitch. He talks to everyone and pushes the whole side," he said."
Atletico's offer to take him to Spain last June, however, provided the former PSV Eindhoven player with the perfect chance to get his career back on track.

ROUGH RIDE

"English football is unique. It is more about fighting spirit and kick and rush. In Spain and Holland they like to play more, hold possession and play a tactical game which suits me better.
"I didn't like living in London, either. The city is so big and crowded, and it is always raining. After about three months there I decided I wanted to leave. My family was also very unhappy and my wife spent most of the time in Serbia.
"But it was a fantastic experience in England with the biggest club in the world at present.
"Now my family and I are very happy in Spain. We love the people, the city, the weather, and the way of life here. Unlike England and Holland everyone is very open and friendly here, more like my home country."
Although pleased with his change to the Spanish capital he admits it has been a rough ride in his first season.
Reserve team coach Pepe Murcia stepped up to replace Carlos Bianchi last month after a run of poor results and the change has galvanised a side that was struggling.
They have now won four Primera Liga games on the trot to move up to ninth in the table, six points off the European places.
"The new coach is very ambitious and works more on the tactics. He makes everything a lot more fun and talks to us a lot more. Bianchi didn't do that. Maybe football is different in Argentina," Kezman said.
"I have scored seven goals in about 17 games so am pleased with my work so far. I would like to stay here to the end of my football career and play in Europe with Atletico. The club and the people deserve it."

SPANISH BECKHAM

Hailed as one of Atletico's star signings last summer he was never likely to challenge Spain striker Fernando Torres in the popularity stakes at the Vicente Calderon.
The 21-year-old former youth teamer has been the club's leading scorer for the last three seasons.
"Torres is a great guy and a great talent. He's still very young but everyone is talking about him and he's very expensive," Kezman said.
"He's great to play with, very quick and very strong, which gives me space. We play well together and are good friends off the pitch as well."
With Chelsea reportedly one of a number of clubs interested in Torres, Kezman had words of warning for his colleague if he considered swapping the Calderon for Stamford Bridge.
"He would have to be prepared to sit on the bench sometimes, and to play in a rotation system," he said. "Mourinho treats everyone the same.
"You have to be a bit special but without an ego. In Spain Torres is a big star like David Beckham is in England. So maybe it would be difficult for him.
"He always asks me about English football, the different clubs and so on, but if a big offer came in from Chelsea then he would have to bare this in mind."

בכול אופן, מה שיותר מעניין זה ההכנות של אתלטי לקראת הדרבי בביוב. כרגיל, חוסר המזל נוטה לצד האדום של הבירה - מקסי רודריגז נפצע באימון של נבחרת ארגנטינה, והוא בספק לדרבי. נחזיק לו אצבעות שיחלים, כי בלעדיו ההתקפה של אתלטי תהיה הרבה פחות מסוכנת. מקסי השחקן המצטיין ב6 הניצחונות הרצופים בצוותה עם אל ניניו. החדשות הטובות הן חזרתם של גלטי ואיבגזה לכושר מלא. השאלה היא האם מורסיה יעדיף לעלות בהרכב זהה לזה שהעלה בברצלונה - כלומר עם גלטי בצד ימין ומקסי, אם יתאושש בזמן, במקומו של קז'מן כחלוץ השני מאחורי טורס. קשה לי להאמין שכך הוא יעשה, אבל אני מקווה שכן. בכול זאת, משחק חוץ בביוב והגיוני שיעלה את המערך היותר הגנתי שלו.

לגבי ונטורין, הבנתי את זה שהוא ישמש כסקאוט של הקבוצה באטליה, פשוט לא נראה לי נחוץ שאתלטי תחפש שם שחקנים, כי כבר ראינו את "ההצלחה" של האטלקים בליגה הספרדית בולנסיה

 

דניאל, רובנו יודעים היטב שההגנה והקישור האחורי של ריאל מדריד הם בלוף. צריך רק להפעיל עליהם לחץ מסויים, והם יקרסו בכוחות עצמם. אתלטיקו חייבת לעלות עם אותו ההרכב ההתקפי והמהיר שניצח את ברצלונה. התקפת מעבר מהירה, שער יתרון מוקדם, ובסבירות גבוהה ריאל רק תעזור לשחקני אתלטי לחפור את הקבר.

 

רשמתי את זה גם בדיון המחזור... רק לפני איזה חצי שעה ככה ראיתי ב'אס', שגם איבאגסה וגם מקסי לא ישחקו, ככה שפפה מורסיה, בלית ברירה, ישנה את השיטה ההתקפית שלו.

 

טוב, צריך לשנות את הכותרת ל"אתלטיקו לא הצליחה וגם לא תצליח לשבור את מנחוס הדרבי". אתלטי קבוצה צעירה, אוסף של שחקנים מוכשרים, אבל אתמול זה לא הספיק. לאתלטי אין מנהיג על המגרש (ועכשיו אני יהיה עמי ויגיד, שגם רוזיצקי וגם מאסצ'ראנו חייבים להגיע לאתלטי), ובהתקפה חסר להם את טורס, שצריך כבר להתחיל לקחת מנהיגות ולהתבגר.
