Ballack is scheduled to sit down with Bayern officials to discuss his future upon his return from holiday on Friday. The German champions are keen to keep him but Ballack is understood to hold doubts on whether he can realise his ambitions in Munich. In a recent interview, he declared he had two remaining targets in football to win the World Cup with Germany and be victorious in the Champions League. He named United as one of the few clubs he believes capable of challenging in the latter competition every season. This was regarded in Germany as a come and get me message to Old Trafford but so far, despite their interest, United have yet to make a move. Last week Ballack rejected an approach from an Italian club, thought to be Juventus, but the source said the player would view an offer from United with greater enthusiasm. Real Madrid and Barcelona are also keen on the midfielder, whose wage demands of about £90,000 per week would be within Uniteds compass. Michael is paid well at Bayern and it is not about money, said the source. What he does next has to be right in football terms and the most important thing for him is winning the Champions League. Bayern want him to extend his contract but, with senior players such as Robert Kovac leaving the club in recent weeks, they may find it difficult to convince Ballack they are better placed to challenge in Europe than last season, when Chelsea eliminated them in the Champions League quarter-finals. The Munich club value him at about £14m but may be prepared to let him go for nothing next year, if an extension cannot be agreed, rather than lose him at the start of what is seen as a vital season in Germany before the 2006 World Cup. Adding intrigue to the situation is the fact Bayern and United will run into one another in Tokyo at the end of this month. Both clubs arrive in the city on July 26 and are playing friendlies against Japanese teams on the same dates of July 28 and July 30.
